When, where, were you born and where do you live?

I was born in Coimbra, June 3rd, 1943 and I live in Oporto.

In which way did your childhood influence what you enjoy doing the most?

I had a happy childhood with great books of images and art books.
I think everything has had an influence, from playing with friends, to books, papers and pencils, collages that I made with cut-out figures from magazines, I was inspired by everything in my childhood.

When did you decide to follow your vocation?

I’ve decided to do illustration because I’ve always liked childhood books, and not only, and when I saw in Paris (1963) Jiri Trnka’s  ‘dreams of a summer night, an animation film….

Is your success more based on your work or on intuition?

I was always very intuitive. As far as work is concerned it depends on the quality and richness of the text! I love to illustrate books that make me forget time.

Who was in your influence?

My mother who also drew, art books, my family in Coimbra, music and other arts, as well as, of course, Trnka.
The city of Prague has also had a huge influence in my work.

How do you define your work?
I don’t define my work. I don’t know how to do it. (I think it’s up to the critics)

What did you bring new to your area of expertise?

I re-started an art, which was moribund in Portugal: Illustration. I suggested and wrote the rules for the National Illustration Award from the Ministry of Culture, which was followed by others.
I did books for 3 to 6 year-olds, which didn’t exist in the Portuguese language.

Is Portugal a good place for your work?

Portugal is not good or bad.
As far as children’s books are concerned, most publishers are ill informed and poorly trained. The work of an illustrator is not well paid, if at all. Young illustrators don’t want to create an official rate and don’t want an Association of Illustrators. Their backs are turned.
There are some good and some very good illustrators but there are more bad than good.

How do you look at the future in professional terms?

I am at the studio during the day and by the end of the afternoon I stop.

How do you integrate your private and business life?

As far as I can I do not mix private and professional.
